OB Visit Timeline

First Visit:           An OB Panel is drawn. The blood test consists of a red blood cell count to check for
anemia, tests to check for HIV antibodies, immunity to German measles (Rubella), including
sexually transmitted diseases, blood type, sickle cell and thalassemia. Also PAP smear and
Urine Culture is sent on first visit.
A 1st trimester ultrasound could be performed; the ultrasound gives the gestational age of
                              the fetus.

EACH VISIT YOU WILL HAVE YOUR WEIGHT, BLOOD PRESSURE AND URINE CHECKED.

11 - 14 weeks:      Nuchal Translucency also known as a Down Syndrome Screen assesses your baby's risk
of having Down Syndrome and some other Chromosomal abnormalities. Comprises of
Ultrasound and Blood tests. Part I is done between 11-14 weeks and includes an
ultrasound. Part II is done between 15-16 weeks and is a blood test only.

15 - 16 weeks:      Alpha-Fetoprotein Test is drawn to see the levels of alpha-fetoprotein combined with the
mother's age and the ethnicity of the parents can indicate the probability of the fetus
having certain Chromosomal disorders and spina bifida.

18 - 22 weeks:      Fetal Anatomy Ultrasound is performed. The technician will view the head, spine, chest,
heart, abdomen, liver, stomach and kidneys. Arms, legs, hands and feet can also be
viewed. If the baby is in the right position it is possible to view the sex of the baby.

24 - 28 weeks:      One hour Glucose Test will check to see if you have Gestational Diabetes.

28 - 36 weeks:      Every-other-week visits to check blood pressure, weight, urine protein and fetal growth.

34 - 36 weeks:      Beta Strep Test is performed because during birth as the baby passes through the vagina
it comes into contact with the bacteria, making it more likely for the baby to get Group B
Strep. To prevent this from happening women who test positive will be given IV antibiotics
                               during labor.

36 - 40 weeks:      Weekly visits to check the same things noted for 28-36 weeks and to assess fetal position.
Some practitioners do internal exams to check the cervix.

40 + weeks:          Twice weekly visits to assure fetal well-being. Non Stress Test (NST) on every visit.
Induction or Cesarean Section will be scheduled.
